flashback to ‘99.
14-year-old yours truly, having a moment on the beam.
The world is such a beautiful place, filled with beautiful people, and pregnant with opportunity for greatness. People default to the well-traveled observations of the ugliness that is more visible and seemingly more apparent, rather than fording a vision of their own to see, not what even lies beneath, but what is all around them.
Walking to my favorite bodega, I smelled fresh grass and was transported back to long summer days in my front yard, imagining the possibilities that Life would be providing me. What happens when we get older that makes us stop believing that our world isn’t endless and wonderful? What makes us stop imagining and trusting? What makes us stop looking towards the sky and start looking at the cracked sidewalk beneath our feet?
Bitterness and pessimism make us victims of premature aging and lead to an early death of the wonderment we once possessed in the naivety of youth. I refuse to surrender to the propaganda that litters minds and media, and hold strong that if we can navigate back to our own moment of childhood peace, when we had such clarity and faith that our universe was without boundaries and burgeoning with potential, then we can make those dreams into a realization.
